Update: Vulcan Basement Waterproofing

Submitted by on July 18, 2006 – 8:39 pmNo Comment

I managed to get in touch with the manager (Frank Verville) at Vulcan to describe my concerns about the system that was installed. He suggested sending out someone to inspect the work that was done and verify that all bases were covered by the system at no additional charge.

The guy showed up on time and inspected the work that was done. Just as the plumber had said, the system that Allen had spec’ed out and recommended would not handle the overflow from the sewer traps. As it turns out, French drains (which what was installed) were not meant to handle situations outside of water dripping down basement walls. The guy from Vulcan said that what should have been done is that backflow valves would have solved the problem and that Vulcal doesn’t do plumbing.

I was absolutely taken for a ride on this one by a sales “manager” who, after reading my email outlining the problem AND meeting with me at the property to examine the problem still recommended a solution that would not work.

I was back on the phone with Frank the next day, asking why French drains had been recommended. Frank seemed to understand where I was coming from and asked that I get an estimate from my plumber to install backflow valves. Since the plumber they sent over knew what needed to be done, I asked to make an appointment with him for an estimate (as Mr. Rooter hasn’t been able to recommend a fix). Frank said he’d send their plumber over within the next week. Even if I have to help with the costs, this could have a chance of working out well with Vulcan.
